Level 3: Trek Fit: shorter distances, with one long day, short ascents and descents, well formed paths or trails, walking up to 6 hours a day.

In feudal times people travelling between Kyoto and Tokyo would use the Nakasendo Trail – the road linking the two major cities through the central mountains. This trip will take you walking along forested paths, travelling between historic Juku post towns and getting a glimpse of what life was like in times gone by. You’ll then travel into the Oku-HIda mountains to explore the biodiversity of Kamikochi before arriving at iconic Narai village. The final stop is the resort town of Karuizawa for some relaxation before your onward journey.


OVERVIEW:


Day 1: Kyoto / Magome

Train from Kyoto to Nakatsugawa , 9 km trek, Nakatsugawa to Magome


Day 2: Magome / Tsumago

8 km trek Magome to Tsumago, afternoon to explore Edo village, afternoon walk 4 km


Day 3: Tsumago / Narai

3 km trek to Nagiso, Train travel to Yabuhara then 6 km trek into UNESCO Narai village famous for Laquerware


Day 4: Matsumoto

Train to Matsumoto, visit Black castle and Matsumoto Art Museum with works by the famous Yayoi Kusma. Train to Karuizawa.


Day 5: Karuizawa
